Priority areas of research in Malaria

    • Development of continuous in vitro Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax culture systems to study complete life cycle.
      1. Development of in vitro culture systems of liver stage parasites of P. vivax and P. falciparum to study hepatic stages.
      2. Development of in vitro culture system of P. vivax erythrocytic stages.
    • Rapid and robust point-of-care glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) test to improve use of 8-aminoquinoline anti-malarial drugs.

    • Bioinformatics studies to identify drug target sites in malaria parasites for the following:

      1. To kill blood stage asexual and sexual parasites.
      2. To kill or prevent development of gametocytes, or blocking sporozoite development in the mosquito
      3. Strategies for sustained or pulsed release formulations of drugs.
    • Genome sequencing of major malaria vectors An.culcifacies/ An.fluviatilis.

    • Biology of liver stage parasites in host and sexual stages in host and mosquito.
