Area of interest:

1. Immunopathogenesis of HIV infection

HIV-specific Immune response: The cytotoxic T cell response in Indian patients was studied. The study reported the epitope recognized by Indian patients in context with class I HLA expression and showed that there is a cross reactivity amongst the epitopes recognized by subtype C infected individuals from subtype C predominant countries like India ,South Africa and Botswana; however there was differential clustering of epitopes within subtype C indicating importance of different class I HLA expression and the virus itself.
Innate immune response in HIV infection: The studies are ongoing to understand the innate immune responses (Natural killer cells and dendritic cells in early as well as late HIV infection and in patients with no disease progression.

2. Mucosal immune response in HIV infection

The characterization of HIV-specific and innate immune response in recent HIV infection as well as in Long Term Non Progressors (LTNPs) is being studied. The immune response restoration in patients treated with ART is being studied.
The area of mucosal immunology in HIV infection is also being studied and the mucosal mononuclear cells (MNCs) are being studied for their maturation status, HIV-specificity and polyfunctionality.

3. HIV vaccine development

The development of HIV vaccine is another area of research in which the Development of a vaccine based on multiple CTL epitopes for Gag and Env antigens from Indian HIV-1subtype C is ongoing.
