Achievements

1. HIV Virology and Molecular Virology

• Establishment of repository of Indian HIV-1 and HIV-2 strains.
• Isolation and characterization of Indian HIV-1, HIV-2 and recombinant strains.
• First report of HIV-2 isolation from India.
• Contribution to NIH ARRRP by donating recently transmitted HIV-1 strains.
• Development of in vitro anti-HIV testing platform including cervical explants and epithelial transwell models for indigenously developed drug/microbicide candidates.
• Testing of several herbal and synthetic preparations for anti-HIV activity under various projects as a support to Indian researchers.
• Establishment and successful participation in international quality assurance programmes for HIV-1 RNA estimation and High Risk Human Papillomavirus (HR-HPV) screening test. 
• Establishment of CD4 and CD8 estimation.
• Establisment of assays for determining neutralizing antibody responses using GHOST and  TZM-bl cell lines
• Characterization of neutralization responses and neutralization phenotypes in recent HIV-1  Infection



2. Rickettsiology

• Establishment of in vitro methods for developing rickettsial antigen using chick, mouse and human embryonic primary cultures and established cell lines.
• Establishment of an in vitro method for isolation and confirmation of Coxiella burnetii from acute infection in an animal model.
