Research Experience:
Research experience in immunodiagnosis and immunogenetics associated with of Sexually Transmitted Infections/Reproductive Tract Infections with an emphasis on Chlamydia trachomatis, Human papilloma virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Bacterial vaginosis, Candida and Trichomonas infections. Principal Investigator on projects supported by WHO, WHO-CONRAD,ICMR.DBT with significant findings;(i) project on Chlamydia, identified HLA alleles association with infertility and recurrent spontaneous abortions,(ii) project on Bacterial vaginosis, highlights its significant association with infertility,(iii) project on HPV highlights its screening as 36% of women with normal cervix had high risk HPV 16/18 types,(iv)project on HIV transmission in discordant couples, identified exclusively presence/absence of HLA alleles, no deletion/mutation in CCR5, CCR2 genes,(v)as collaborator on clinical trial of 6% Cellulose Sulphate, observed this microbicides to be unsafe for HIV prevention, (vi)collaboration with RMRC (ICMR), Bhubaneswar, revealed 7.04% C. trachomatis infection rate among OPD cases in Orissa,(vii)guided MBBS student for thesis (STS fellow, ICMR), revealing 77% of pregnant women in rural Maharashtra had RTIs/STIs,(viii) Infections diagnose were treated by clinical collaborators, thus research outcome helps in diagnosis and prevention of RTIs/STIs. I was a member and contributed significantly in the development of “National Guidelines on Prevention, Management and Control of Reproductive Tract Infections including Sexually Transmitted Infections”, now in use by NACO in STI clinics. I am expert in PCR, RFLP, Southern Hybridisation, Cloning, Construction of DNA vaccines, Preparation of bacterial ghost, HLA and cytokine gene polymorphism analysis. Good research experience on epidemiology and immunology of Lymphatic Filariasis. Recognized Guide of Mumbai University for Ph.D. and P.G. degree in Life Sciences.
