routine of the mothers and workers as well. This interevention strategy can be used by anybody as it is simple and not time consuming.

The training should stress more on psychological factors like child neglect, neurotic traits, characterstics of the mother etc. as the orientation towards these and their intervention is found to be less among the workeres and also because these were the factors which generated interest among them. Factors like abject poverty and adverse neighbourhood environment cannot be changed drastically. The stress should be on improving the communication patterns in the family, giving knowledge regarding proper child rearing, needs for good psychological development and so on. The interevention should stress on the strenghths of the mother and drawing the attention of the family members ot the positive aspects in the family to facilitate better results.

B. Lucknow Centre

  1. Some observations made about family interventions

The intervention programme at Lucknow centre seems to be quite effective. The strategy used was, first of all, to establish a good rapport with the mothers by talking to them, to listen to them with patience and by showing a sympathetic attitude towards their problems. As a result of this, the intervention team (AW and or Research Workers) was accepted in most of families (64.4% in city slum area and 71.1% in rural area). Mothers came forward and discussed their problems not only related to their children's health or their own health but also related to their job, income, marriage and education of children, family relationships and family planning. The mothers listened to whatever advice they were given and a large number of mothers (46.8% in city slum area and 46.7% in rural area) also followed the advice given to them regarding their problems. One important thing which helped the intervention workers (IW) to establish the rapport with and motivate the mothers who were very uncooperative in the beginning, was that they never got irritated or criticised the mothers when they (the mothers) made negative remarks about the team or the programme. They never avoided visiting those families. The families who were living in most unfavourable neighbourhood complained that the AWs never visit them because of the unhygenic conditions prevailing near their nouses. The research team was very well received in these families and there was high level of cooperation.
