2. Medihalli Village:
The second rural area was a village Medihalli which is 30 kms from NIMHANS and 3 kIns from the first village. This village has 62 houses and a population of 407. It has an Anganwadi Centre, a Government Primary School, a Milk Producers' Co-operative Society and a temple. The main occupation is agriculture.

3. Billapura Village: The third rural area was Billapura village which is 28.5 kms from NIMHANS and 2 kms. from the second village. The village has a population of 639 (Males 347 and Females 292). It has an Anganwadi Centre, a Government Primary School, a temple and Milk Producers' Co-operative Society. Harijans are given sites away from the village. The main occupation of the villagers is agriculture.

Description of Slum Area

Kaverinagar slum was selected as the city slum area in the present phase. This slum is 10 kms from NIMHANS. The slum has a population of 3,345. The slum comes under Bangalore City Corporation limits. There are three Anganwadi Centres. Each Anganwadi worker is incharge of a population of 1000. The National Institute of Public Co-operation and Child Development has adopted one of the Anganwadi Centres as a model centre. The Medical Officer associated to the Corporation Hospital visits the centres once in a month for a medical check up. The ANM's associated with the hospital visit once a month for immunization. This slum has a temple and a mosque. The occupation of the residents of the slum is mostly casual labour. The area is totally covered by ICDS programme.

(b) Lucknow Centre

I. (a) Description of the two study areas; Khadara (Experimental and city slum areas)

Khadara slum is situated about 3 kms. away from the Department of Psychiatry on Lucknow-Sitapur highway. It is a large and thickly wpulated area and is 100% saturated by the ICDS programme. About 60% families: belong to Muslim religion. Most of the families have no perrmanent source of income. The literacy rate is very low. The residents of this area are permanent and are reported to have lived there for about 8tQ 10 years. Here we hoped to attain the target sample.
