Education and Training

*    12 workshops were conducted by ICMR under WHO sponsorship in 6 States (Delhi, Maharastra, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, West Bengal) in the biennium  2002-2003 with additional training workshops for trainers & evaluation workshops.

*   Culturally sensitive bioethics curriculum has been developed focusing not only on local and nationally relevant biomedical ethical issues but also on international health research issues through Grant received from Fogarty International Center of National Institutes of Health, USA (NIH Planning Grant).  

*   Training workshops on bioethics have been conducted in various parts of the country for faculty, researchers, medical undergraduates, non-medical and medical postgraduates and trainers through Grant received from Fogarty International Center of National Institutes of Health, USA (NIH Training Grant).  

*  A centrally co-ordinated Bioethics network of faculty among ICMR and non-ICMR Institutions has been developed to deliver the prepared bioethics curriculum for dissemination of Bioethics Education. A system of evaluation to modify the curriculum on an ongoing basis through feedback is also being developed.  

*  Established national and international network of trainees who trained under Fogarty programs.  

*  WHO sponsored preparation of textbook as resource material for teaching in Bioethics in India and         compilation of case studies is in process for publication.    

*  Co-ordinated WHO SEAR initiative in incorporating ethics in the medical education.

*  Under Fogarty Training Grant a distance education model will soon be initiated for wider dissemination of Bioethics. 

*   Many Health Universities of India are collaborating for organising training programs/workshops and are taking steps to incorporate teaching of bioethics at various levels starting with the medical undergraduates. The Universities are also collaborating with the bioethics cell  in preparation of bioethics curriculum.

*   Students and graduates from Institutions of Traditional Systems of Medicine are also being sensitised.  Some of these programs are sponsored by WHO and also through the Training Grant of NIH.   

*  Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (DAYUSH) has invited members of Bioethics Cell to prepare ethical guidelines specifically for these systems.

*  Researcher from WHO-SEAR region and neighboring countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar were trained in 3-5 days workshops. Three international workshops have been conducted (2002, 2004, 2006).
